Read full description of the books:
Some of the essays in this book are astoundingly good. Seriously. The intro by Omid Safi outlines the essential concerns of progressive Islam -- engaging tradition, social justice, gender justice, and pluralism. Farid Esack's essay "In search of progressive Islam beyond 9/11" offers a progressive response to 9/11 and a spot-on critique of the liberal rhetoric about Islam that dominated the media after 9/11, and still does, really. And Ebrahim Moosa's "The debts and burdens of critical Islam" represents a fascinating suggestion about the role intellectuals can play in their own religion as they move beyond apologetics. Those are just a couple of the really solid essays in this book. This collection is invaluable if only because it is a shining example of responsible, well-researched, and provocative discourse about Islam in particular and religion in general. It can be done!
