Read full description of the books:
Survival-horror has been part of the manga landscape since at least Kazuo Umezu's The Drifting Classroom, but there's no doubt that it received a huge boost from Battle Royale. Nowadays it's everywhere -- Btooom!, Aphorism, Cage of Eden, RealPG, Strobo, etc. Nor is the genre confined to the shonen and seinen demographics as Keiko Suenobu's Limit demonstrates -- even girls in Japan want in on the thrill of murdering their classmates.
The story follows a predictable set-up -- Mizuki Konno's class is on its way for a group camping trip, but the bus driver falls asleep at the wheel and plunges into a heavily wooded ravine in one of the more desolate areas of Japan. There are only five survivors who, wouldn't you know it, are the five people least likely to get along. Will they be able to work together to survive until the school notices they're missing?
Not a chance in hell.
While other survival-horror authors either have an external force impose a kill-or-be-kill situation on their characters, or go for a slow and natural build-up to the carnage, Suenobu says, "Screw that," and rushes through the foreplay. By the end of chapter 2 the girls are ready to go all Lord of the Flies. (How convenient, the teacher included a scythe in the class camping gear!)
The real problem with this series is that it's by Keiko Suenobu. If you've read her previous series, Life, you know the premise of that was, "Teenage girls are psychopaths barely held in check by society." And the premise of this series is, "Teenage girls are psychopaths barely held in check by society." The only difference is that Limit takes society away so the girls can go at it without any restraints. But that's like the difference between an MMA match and a street fight. The characters in Limit act just like the ones in Life, only more so. And that undermines the very point of survival-horror -- the genre is about how people behave in the State of Nature, and if the answer is, "Just like in civilization, except they don't pull their punches," what's the point?
